Emissions Fee
Also known as: Pollution Fee, Environmental Fee, Clean Air Fee
An emissions fee is a charge collected by state or local governments to offset the environmental impact of vehicle emissions. It is often included as part of registration or inspection fees and may vary based on vehicle type, fuel efficiency, or weight. Emissions fees help fund programs that monitor and control air quality, develop clean transportation initiatives, and maintain compliance with federal environmental standards. In some areas, higher-polluting vehicles are assessed larger fees, while hybrids and electric vehicles may be exempt or charged reduced amounts. These fees encourage consumers to adopt cleaner, more efficient vehicles and support efforts to reduce smog and greenhouse gases. For car buyers, emissions fees represent an additional but often modest cost of ownership that contributes to broader environmental goals.
Example
Noah registers his pickup truck in a state that charges a $25 emissions fee. The money goes toward funding clean air initiatives and maintaining statewide emissions monitoring programs.
