Excess Mileage Fee
Also known as: Over-Mileage Charge, Mileage Penalty, Extra Mileage Fee
Excess mileage fees are additional charges imposed when a lessee exceeds the mileage allowance in their lease contract. Lease agreements typically include annual mileage limits, such as 10,000, 12,000, or 15,000 miles per year. If the lessee surpasses this limit, they are required to pay a per-mile penalty at lease-end, which often ranges from $0.15 to $0.30 per mile, though luxury vehicles may incur higher rates. These charges compensate the leasing company for the vehicle’s additional depreciation due to higher usage. Excess mileage fees can significantly increase the total cost of leasing if not planned for in advance. To avoid unexpected expenses, consumers should estimate their driving habits realistically before signing a lease and select an appropriate mileage allowance. In some cases, additional miles can be purchased upfront at a lower cost per mile. For drivers who consistently exceed mileage limits, purchasing or financing a vehicle may be a more cost-effective alternative than leasing.
Example
James leases a car with a 12,000-mile annual limit. By the end of his three-year lease, he has driven 45,000 miles - 9,000 miles over the allowance. With a fee of $0.20 per mile, he owes an additional $1,800 in excess mileage charges.
