Over-the-Air Updates

Also known as: OTA Updates, Wireless Software Updates, Remote Vehicle Updates

Over-the-air updates, often referred to as OTA updates, are wireless software downloads sent directly to a vehicle’s computer systems. Enabled by built-in connectivity, OTA updates allow automakers to improve vehicle performance, fix security vulnerabilities, and even introduce entirely new features without requiring a dealership visit.

Tesla popularized this concept, but many automakers now include OTA capability in their connected vehicles. OTA updates reduce inconvenience for drivers, enhance safety, and create opportunities for automakers to continue improving vehicles after purchase.

They also help manufacturers save costs by reducing recalls for software issues. For consumers, OTA updates offer convenience and ensure vehicles remain up to date, similar to smartphones or computers.

However, concerns exist about cybersecurity, as hackers could theoretically exploit vulnerabilities to access or control vehicles. Automakers must invest heavily in encryption, testing, and monitoring to maintain trust.

Another challenge is subscription models: some companies may use OTA updates to gate premium features behind recurring payments, creating frustration among consumers. For dealerships, OTA updates can reduce service visits, potentially impacting revenue.

However, they also improve customer satisfaction by providing seamless improvements. Ultimately, OTA updates exemplify the transformation of cars into digital platforms, where software is as important as hardware.

They highlight the automotive industry’s shift toward ongoing customer engagement through technology.

Example

After buying her EV, Mia receives an OTA update that improves battery efficiency by 7% and adds a new driver-assist feature. She installs it overnight without visiting the dealership, enjoying a better-performing vehicle the next morning.
