Special APR

Also known as: Promotional APR, Discounted APR, Low APR Offer
A special APR (annual percentage rate) is a limited-time promotional financing offer designed to make auto loans more appealing by lowering borrowing costs. These programs are typically sponsored by automakers through their captive finance companies and are advertised as rates well below market averages - sometimes as low as 0%. Special APRs are used to stimulate demand, especially for new or slow-selling models. Eligibility usually requires excellent credit, and terms are often shorter, such as 36 or 48 months. While special APRs reduce financing costs, they may not always be the best deal if combined with a higher selling price or if the buyer could benefit more from a rebate. Buyers should calculate total loan costs under both scenarios to decide which option yields greater savings. Special APR offers are one of the most effective marketing tools for automakers, but they are only beneficial if the buyer qualifies and if the loan terms align with their financial situation.

Example

Daniel finances a $30,000 sedan with a promotional 0% APR for 36 months. His monthly payments are $833, and he pays no interest over the life of the loan, saving more than $2,000 compared to a standard 5% loan.
