Vehicle Inspection Sticker
Also known as: Inspection Decal, Safety Sticker, Compliance Sticker
A vehicle inspection sticker is a decal placed on the windshield or license plate of a vehicle to certify that it has passed state-mandated safety or emissions inspections. The sticker indicates the expiration date of the inspection, reminding drivers when their next test is due. Requirements for inspection stickers vary by state, with some requiring annual checks and others every two years. Inspections typically cover critical safety systems such as brakes, lights, tires, steering, and emissions. Without a valid inspection sticker, drivers may face fines, registration suspension, or inability to renew their plates. While inspection stickers are being phased out in some areas in favor of electronic verification, they remain a common method of ensuring compliance in many states. For consumers, the inspection sticker provides visible proof that the vehicle is roadworthy and meets environmental standards.
Example
Alex lives in a state requiring annual inspections. After passing the safety and emissions test, his car receives a new inspection sticker valid for one year, allowing him to legally operate the vehicle.
