Rebate
Also known as: Cash Rebate, Manufacturer Rebate, Customer Rebate
A rebate is a promotional discount provided by the manufacturer, often in the form of cash back or a direct reduction in the vehicle’s price. Rebates are commonly used to boost sales of certain models, clear out older inventory, or compete in a crowded market. They can significantly lower the cost of a new car and may be applied upfront at the point of sale or returned to the buyer as a check after purchase. Some rebates are conditional, requiring buyers to meet eligibility criteria such as financing through the manufacturer’s captive lender, being a recent college graduate, or serving in the military. Rebates differ from dealer discounts in that they originate from the manufacturer rather than the dealership. While highly attractive, rebates may reduce the vehicle’s resale value since they effectively lower the transaction price. Consumers should also note that rebates may be taxable in some jurisdictions, slightly reducing their net benefit. Overall, rebates provide valuable savings opportunities for informed buyers.
Example
Mia purchases a new SUV with an MSRP of $35,000. The manufacturer offers a $2,500 rebate, lowering her purchase price to $32,500 before taxes and fees.
